weekend update

years ago, someone i once worked with asked why i never publish my art on this blog. art is where things started, the whole design bit was roundabout: for a long time, i drew bits and pieces and created logos and stationery for people. it was a small (happy) business. it was great, it fit all around raising 4 active kids, and the logos and stationery turned into events and flowers which led to houses and stores and, eventually, this blog. now, another small plunge. to put up (and admit to) something i've drawn. it's just a sketch (from December?), but it represents the style used while working.

which leads to the daily project thing. the doll in palaka definitely took more space than a day. her face looks pretty much like most of the faces i've drawn since second grade, only maybe a little more. there's a reason things hit a jam here. since drawing that face, everything has revolved around it. still working on the one-project-a-day-plan, just not publishing everything; some of them are quite off-the-cuff. the bird, below, is from day 15.

p.s.

here's a picture i lifted (without meaning to) from someone on ebay; tried to go back and find it and purchase it, but didn't have the patience to sift through the piles. it wasn't even really expensive. it's all about patience, i guess. she looks full of hope, sort of, doesn't she? but pragmatic. (pragmatism can be helpful at times.) look at the mom taking the picture. she's in the mirror.

on the world being mud-lucious [again]

hop-scotch and jump-rope

[in our backyard, the wisteria is
in bloom and it is spectacular.
the lavender is happy, the lime
tree has so many buds it is
dizzying & on these warm days,
after the rains we've seen,
the scent is sweeter than any i've
ever known. a rare slice of heaven.]

reverie

honestly, if min could just come wave a magic
wand in my house and take care of all the things
that needed to be taken care of (wallpaper? fresh
fabrics on the well-loved chairs? assorted odds &
ends?), i'd be quite happy to just go read to young
ones all day. the traveling story-lady, or some such
thing; we could make dioramas. and books. and...

a girl can dream, right?

gorgeous rooms, papers, fabrics: min hogg

(and i am realizing that even without most
excellent min & her way with a home, this
reading and book-making is what i will do,
anyway. time to take a dream and make it
real? the chairs, in their old fabric, smile.)

Min Hogg. The Seaweed Collection.

No secret here that I have had a long-time affection for all things Min: imagine my delight when a lovely reader wrote in yesterday to say that our Ms. Hogg is here.

And, having just returned from a few days at the beach, I am more than ready to have Min Hogg pull Seaweed (& anything else she wants) through every room of our house.

Thanks, TrickyMicky. Please visit again soon, perhaps with more tide-ings of great joy.

dear reader: apologies for quick screen
shots from the sweet site; i am supposed
to be tidying the house we left for a few days &
had promised myself not to blog until it was done
(and it is not, but i had to post about Min. had to.)

Vintage Anna Internet: Office Office

Well, I imagine that everyone may have already seen this before, eons ago, but I just found it (in my current WOI search...Anna's house was in the mag, a while back) and I thought it was worth a gander. More here.

The office. The bob. The wall, the blooms. Simple, elegant, inspired. Exquisite vintage internet Anna.

Min Hogg, MFK Fisher, and Alice Waters.

Well, I was thinking today that if Min Hogg could fix up the world and MFK Fisher were still around to write about it, and Alice Waters could handily put together the meals (and I suppose MFK would have a jolly time scribbling notes about that), well, I think the world might be a better place.

Min Hogg is the brilliant editorial eye/source of most of the insanely fabulous everything that had been World of Interiors for many years. She left a while back, and WoI is still very good and very lovely and one of the two magazines I actually still subscribe to. (Well, add Wired. With Dwell. Gotta love Dwell. I want to live in just about every Dutch house they find. So I guess it's three magazines, now.)

Anyhow, somehow I was just pondering the charming effect that these three brilliant women have had on our universe, and wishing they could run a few things.

I'm hoping this post makes the vaguest bit of sense; I am supposed to be helping e. pack for camp, and it is time to go wash some more socks, so I am tossing this out there.
